This bat roost box (also known as a nest box) is designed to offer a safe space for insectivorous bats, promoting biological insect control and natural balance in gardens, orchards, and agricultural environments.

Why install a bat roost box?

Bats use cracks, hollows, and natural shelters to rest and reproduce, but these spaces are becoming increasingly scarce due to building renovations, the loss of traditional constructions, and the transformation of rural environments.

Installing a bat roost box helps compensate for this lack of shelters, offering a safe space where they can take refuge during the day. Furthermore, it is a simple and direct way to contribute to the conservation of these species, many of which are protected and fundamental for the balance of ecosystems.

Benefits for biological insect control

Insectivorous bats are one of the most effective allies in biological insect control, as they feed on large quantities of mosquitoes, moths, and other nocturnal insects.

A single colony can consume thousands of insects every night, naturally reducing the presence of pests and decreasing the need for chemical products. For this reason, bat shelters are especially useful in gardens, orchards, agricultural farms, and rural environments where a more sustainable approach is sought.

Shelter design and features

This roost box is handcrafted from natural wood from sustainable forests, respectful of the environment and the needs of bats, and suitable for outdoor use.

Its design includes:

  • Narrow bottom entrance that increases security
  • Grooved interior of the box to facilitate grip and nesting for bats
  • Closed structure, no perches
  • Design intended to maintain an adequate microclimate

These characteristics favor the occupation of the shelter by different species of insectivorous bats and guarantee its durability over time.

Where and how to place the bat roost box

To increase the likelihood of occupation, it is recommended to install the roost box:

  • At an approximate height of 5 meters
  • On stable facades, walls, trees, or posts
  • With a south or southeast orientation, avoiding drafts
  • Away from direct nocturnal light sources

Once installed, it is recommended to occasionally check its external condition and reapply a coat of linseed oil annually if necessary, avoiding opening it or disturbing the animals.

Assembled roost box or environmental education kit

This bat roost box is available both assembled, ready for installation, and as an assembly kit, especially designed for environmental education activities, school workshops, and awareness projects.

The kit allows for a better understanding of the role of bats in the ecosystem and their importance in biological insect control, promoting practical learning and respect for wildlife. Once assembled, the shelter offers the same performance and security as the assembled version.
